Electro-Technical Officers Course
(Mandatory Pre-sea Training leading to Certification for Merchant Ships)
The 17-week Electro Technical Officer Course is a pre-sea training course approved by the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA). The course is designed to give candidates adequate knowledge and skills to take on the responsibility of Electro Technical Officer on merchant ships.
Electro-Technical Officers Course is a specialized course that is mandatory for those who want to serve on ships. The pre-sea course is conducted at African Seafarers Training Group (ASTG) and deals with initial familiarization with shipboard systems, equipment, and machinery involved in the operation of the vessels.
The relevant electrical and electronic equipment’s control and automation systems will be dealt with in detail to enable the candidate to nurture decision-making for troubleshooting and rectification of defects. The course makes the candidate aware of the risks involved at sea and the importance of imbibing a safety culture.
Upon successful completion of the classroom training, cadets are awarded a pre-sea course completion certificate and qualified to join a ship as an Electro Technical Officer, where he or she is required to complete at least 6 months’ training service on merchant navy vessels.
Upon completion of the training period, one is awarded Certificates of Competency (CoC) under the new category of technically qualified and trained officer. The course consists of 17 weeks (4 months) of long classroom (pre-sea) training and 10 months of onboard training where the cadet is entitled to a stipend, free boarding, and lodging.
Please Note:
i) Candidates seeking admissions to marine programs are strongly recommended to have passports. Please note that the name on the passport should be the same as given on the 10th grade certificate.
ii) Admission to this course is granted after fulfilling the below-mentioned eligibility criteria.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational Qualification:
- Passed 10+2 in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics with a minimum of 55% marks, and English with a minimum of 50% marks.
- Passed 60% marks in a four-year degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, or Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering only. A minimum of 6 months of industrial experience is preferred.
- The diploma or degree courses must have been recognized by any state, central government, or SACE.
Age and Medical Fitness:
Not more than 28 years on the date of commencement of training and medically fit, including eye sight and hearing, as prescribed in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examination) Rules, 2000, as amended from time to time.
Procedure to Join ETO Training
- A clear entrance test of 100 marks The test is divided into English, Electrical Engineering, and Aptitude Tests. It is a 3-hour-long test.
- Clear Psychology Test: It is a 2-hour test with personality-based questions.
- Panel Interview: Shortlisted students are called for an interview via email.
- Medical Exam and Eye Test: You will undergo a medical test conducted by company-appointed doctors
- Provisional Selection Letter: After qualifying, you will be given a selection letter with fee details in it. You need to submit the mentioned documents and reserve a seat in the institution.
Online Entrance Test
The test consists of two sections:
for a total duration of 3 hours.

Admission Procedure
- Fill out the form online, upload all the required documents, and make a payment of R. 280 online.
- The institute will communicate regarding the online test, interview, and medical test.
Opportunities
After the completion of the course, eligible students will be issued the CDC, SAoS No., and Course Completion Certificate. The students will be eligible to join Merchant Ships as Electrical Officers.
Campus placement interviews will be arranged with the global shipping companies.
